Hitachi Deskstar Makes my Case Fans Run SO Loud

I've had a problem with my case fans running inexplicably loud recently, even on idle... Last night I happened to unplug my 7 year old Hitachi Deskstar (salvage) and all of a sudden *bam* case fans go back to nearly silent.

My question is... Does this mean my HDD is about to go out? It was never this loud. I ran the HItachi fitness thing and it said all my disks were aligned... Should I expect to be replacing this monstrosity of a HDD soon?

Solution

The only way I could see this being possible is if it is emitting an insane amount of heat and your fans are plugged into your motherboard and the HDD heat causes the CPU to heat up and it spins the case fans up. If they are connected to molex they will spin at their max (unless there is a switch like the Antec Tricools) RPM unless you add a resistor to lower then to 7v instead of 12v.

So if anything the HDD cannot make the fans spin up.

I say replace it. The Seagate 2/3TB right now are some of the best and I have 2 of the 2TBs in a RAID 0...
It might not be the case fans but it may be the drive itself. ANd while the tools can tell you some things, it can't tell you if the HDD is going to fail mechanically. It sounds like it could be going bad soon. The best way to test is to throw the HDD into a dock or another PC and see if it causes the same issue.

Luckily this is just my data-slave... I use an SSD for all my applications, etc.

I wouldn't expect it to be the fans, this is a 7 month old build (still a baby), and the HDD is by far the oldest part (the only used/salvaged part on the whole build!)

I should put it into another computer to see if it does it though. All I know is when I removed the HDD last night it made everything normal...

But it's not the clicking/scratching/snapping that most HDD's make... it's actually affecting the case fans in my build and making them run faster.
