Hello ,

I just bought a new internal HDD for my laptop , its Western Digital WD500LPVX .

Right now while i am tying this message , i am also checking the drive for any bad sectors and all using the WD's diagnostic tool "Western Digital Data LifeGuard Diagnostics - WinDlg (DLGDIAG for Windows)" .

So the problem is , there is a constant "ticking sound" coming from the HDD. It's almost inaudible . Can only be heard when there is complete silence in the room or when i place it near my ear . i mean really close .

So, is this normal while performing the diagnostic test on HDDs ? Or is there something to be worried about ?

This HDD is brand new , i just bought it day before yesterday and haven't even formatted it yet . It's completely RAW right now.

Thanks for the replies in Advance

I think the ticking sound is referred as a clicking sound technically, and if the HDD truly making clicking sound then there is a mechanical error involved. So no diagnostic's tool can catch that. The drives SMART status is all right, but not mechanically. And for your kind information, a good drive will not make such noise no matter how hard its working.

So its better to RMA the drive.

Thanks for the reply and no its not CPU HSF coz the HDD is not inside the Laptop . Right now I've connected it to my laptop using an external HDD case .

And the Diagnostic test is still running and will take another 2hrs & 41mins .

But the SMART and Quick Test results were Pass with no Sector Damage/ Bad Sectors .

I am just thinking is it really the warning of its going to be dead soon ? Or is it just coz of the test, its working to its highest and making that sound ?

I Will let you know about the diagnosis result as soon as its done.

Thing is , If it's a problem which needs replacement, I can do that coz its still under warranty . But I do not want to copy all my data from my other HDD to this one and later this turns out to be a defective one and then i end up with lost data. That is why i wanna make sure that this one is not defective one.

Anyway , thanks for the reply

Extended Scan is complete and the Result is a "PASS" no damaged/BAD sector

But still the damn ticking sound...

What to do ?
