So I just built a computer last week and bought the gigabyte 4gb GTX 770 to "future proof" myself. Little did I know that AMD came out with a direct competitor with the r9 280x.

With the R9 290x just released, should I return my GTX 770 for an r9 280x (have one on back order for the Sapphire Toxic edition) or go all-in with the r9 290x ? 1080p gaming only.. i don't forsee getting a 1440p monitor in the near future unless they drop down to the 200-250 range.

Stick with your GTX770 the shipping and restocking fees are going to take away the price savings to 280X and the 770 is plenty for 1080P.

Thanks for the quick response.

I bought the card from Amazon and don't believe they have any restocking fees for returns. The card was $449.

Sounds like a 290x would be extreme overkill then huh?

For 1080P it is but a great performer according to the reviews. Really it is your money and the GTX770 was just overpriced, still is looking at the competition.
