Does a USB to IDE adapter work?

Does it REALLY WORK?
Thanks ahead of time as I know the adapter are available, but couldn't fine questions similar to mine in forum history.
 
Solution
You lose access to some low-level features but other than that, it usually works.

If it didn't, there wouldn't be so many external USB HDD boxes on the market... they are all standard HDDs with a USB-IDE/SATA bridge chip.
