i was wondering if i could overclock my intel i3 3225 @ 3.3GHz to 3.5GHz if possible i am using the standard cooler thats comes with the CPU and it usually runs at 40 degrees Celsius and under load like rendering a video it get up to about 50 degrees Celsius. Is it going to be safe to over clock the CPU on the standard cooler if not i have $15 dollars to spend on a cooler my friend as sorted a good one for me so know worry's there

Solution
Because your motherboard has a B75 chipset, you will not be able to overclock.
You would need a Z77 based motherboard to overclock a i5-3570K
If you do not change out your motherboard, I suggest a i5-3350P assuming you are a gamer and have a discrete graphics card.

That CPU will not overclock because it is not unlocked. You can however if you motherboard allows it increase the FSB speed from 100MHz+ but this is NOT recommended on Intel motherboards because it doesn't just overclock the CPU but everything on the board.

You cannot get any substantial overclock as it is a locked chip. you might be able to go from 100 to about 105 on the blck speed but that is about it and still wouldn't put you at 3.5ghz. If you want to overclock, you would have to upgrade to a 3570k or 3770k or switch to an AMD FX system. The 3570k is the least expensive option.

I've hooked up a pretty solid water cooler on a i3 2120 on a z68 mobo and still couldn't get completely stable @ 105 fsb. Computer ran and the actual cpu was stable, but all of the USB ports shut down completely. 106 wouldn't even boot. You just can't do it with intel. :(

The absolute best chip for the money for non overclocking Ivy boards is the Xeon X3 1230 v2. It is an i7 without the IGP for only a few dollars more than a 3570k. Also, since they lack IGP, they run cooler.
