What do you think about this build?

  • ■ Motherboard Gigabyte GA-H87M-D3H Socket 1150 Chipset H87
    ■ CPU Intel Haswell Core i5 4440 Socket 1150 6MB 3.1Ghz Box
    ■ RAM 1 x Corsair 2GB DDR3 1333Mhz
    ■ Chassis ThermalTake V9 Black Edition 2x230mm 2x120mm + Led VJ400G1N2Z
    ■ PSU SS-400ET
    ■ Graphic Card GV-R575D5-1G (Radeon HD 5750 GPU)

The graphic card is the same one that I used in my old PC, so it didn't count in the price.
I have 2 more memory sticks from my old PC, each 2GB/Kingston, so overall I'll have 6GB of RAM.

It is meant for playing games (medium settings), programming and watching HD movies.

The screen resolution is from 1600x1200 to 1920x1080, screen size around 23".

Solution
The i5 CPU is an overkill for the components that you are running. You are paying for something that you will not even fully utilize!

That CPU is also cheaper which would allow you to purchase a new graphics card as well. If you are unable to purchase a CPU now the i3 will work better with your old GPU until you can afford to replace it.

The Sapphire card is priced at $90 USD. Where are you from?

Can you please explain the memory that you will be purchasing more in detail? To get the best performance you would need to buy to sticks to take advantage of Dual-Channel memory.

Hi,

I'm not sure what there is to explain..
I'm buying a single memory stick of 2GB, adding 2 memory sticks of 2GB each from my old PC.
Total RAM size is 6GB (3 memory sticks).
The dual channel feature is to be taken advantage by one pair of memory sticks. Anyway I understand that this feature doesn't significantly increase performance.

What do you mean?

Why would you go with i3 instead of what I chose?
Would a good i3 selection would be:
"Intel Haswell Core I3 4130 Socket 1150 3MB 3.4Ghz Box"
?

A graphic card like SAPPHIRE HD 7750 1GB GDDR5, costs about 160$ USD at my place. Is it considered a low price?

But what is the reason that the CPU's potential won't be fulfilled?
Because of the RAM? It's 6GB...
I'm from Israel. Where are you from..?

Thanks for composing this list but only the CPU costs 230$ USD at my place... so I guess that overall, the system would cost about 1000$ :/

The graphics card that you currently have would be your bottleneck. Any game that you would play with that graphics card would max out the card and the processor would sit at less than 50% because it is going as fast the the graphics card. It is kind of hard to explain online haha.. but that graphics card would be the bottleneck and having a high end CPU would be pointless.

How did you get to that conclusion? I mean, by which calculations or benchmarks?
I need to know this in order to understand how to choose appropriate components for my systems

Also, you say that the graphic card would be the bottleneck, but what about other processes that running in the background, except for the game?
And what about other applications that don't use the graphic card as much (would probably make the CPU as the bottleneck for these applications).

Thank you..

Edit:

BTW, my old CPU (from my old PC) is Intel Core i5-750.

I don't have any benchmarks to provide you with unfortunately. I have been building systems for sometime now and have a good understanding of general performance without the need of reviewing benchmarks.

The i5 that you have really doesn't need to be replaced if that is what you are running. I would replace the graphics card and run with what you have.

I am just here trying to help you save money and get the best performance for your dollar.

What other processes would you be running in the background? Music, chat programs, while gaming do not use much resources at all.

Unfortunately I must replace the CPU because that my motherboard is faulty, due to a bad PSU, see this thread about the details.

I'm not sure about the processes that run in the background, I thought maybe there are some operating system processes or something that require resources besides of the game..

Anyway I'm thinking of buying i3-4130, together with GA-H87M-D3H motherboard.
The graphic card would stay the same, meaning GV-R575D5-1G (Radeon HD 5750 GPU).

For the meantime I'm not looking for a major upgrade, only need to get back my old PC running.

Thank you :)

That sounds like a great idea. Please don't forget to select the best answer!
