8-pin connector from PSU to motherboard too short.

Without the graphics card (Sapphire 7970), the connector is able to reach the top of the motherboard and be plugged in without any problems. If I put my graphics card in, the cord is too short if I put it over the card. If I plug in the cord first and put it against the motherboard, I am able to put the GPU in but I am worried about temperatures and possible melting of the wires.

Is the only possible way to fix this problem is to buy an 8-pin extension? Are there other ways to deal with this problem? Thanks.

Solution
On a previous PSU, i had to route the CPU power under the graphics card, to one side or other of the pcie slot before you put the card in...should work.

Will the temperatures of the GPU cause any problems for the wires?

No, the shroud of the GPU doesn't really get hot (which is all they'd be touching, the die is what gets hot,the wires will stay as cool as they would otherwise.

By "die", you're referring to the thing that looks like a CPU at the center of the card right? Not familiar with this term, had to look it up on google images.

Yes, the actual chip in the center of the card, that's where the heat is.
