Cross Compatibility With PCI-e 3.0 and 1.0

Hi everybody. I have a Custom PC with a MS-7525 HP/ Compaq/ MSI motherboard. I currently have a PCI-e 2.0 Graphics Card. Could it handle a PCI-e 3.0 graphics card? I run windows 7 and 4gb ram.

  1. While it is perfectly possible to run a PCI-e 3.0 card in a PCI-e 1.0 slot, it is not adviseable as you simply wouldnt be utilising the full performance of the card.

If you are planning on buying a PCI-e 3.0 GPU and putting it in a PCI-e 1.0 slot, chances are the rest of your system is probably quite dated. meaning that such a modern card will be bottlenecked by not just the slot but the rest of the systerm. =)

Thanks you, but will it hurt the graphics card or my computer by putting it in. And my computer is 2 years old.
  3. Also, the card that I am looking at is: MSI Radeon HD7770 Power Edition 1GB OC.

  4. pci 1.0? running at x16? if so should be fine with HD7770 but if its x1 speed no, i'm pretty sure pci 1.0 at x16 is same as pcie 2.0 x8 but highly suggest upgrading ur computer if u has PCI 1.0 as CPU is prob going bottleneck the GPU.

Running a PCI-e 3.0 GPU in a PCI-e 1.0 slot will not ahrm either the motherboard or the GPU. The only effect you will notice is that you wont get as much performance as those who are running a PCI-e 3.0 GPU in a PCI-e 2.0 or 3.0 socket.
