Compaq 57 unreadable screen, multi coloured flashing lines/squares

Compaq 57 unreadable screen, multi coloured flashing lines/squares how do I fix it if I can't see the screen ? It stabilizes when the screen goes black and the pointer appears during boot but other than that I can't read a thing. It periodically will boot up and I can read it for about a minute then goes but it hasn't done that for the past couple of days. Thoughts ???

I've never heard of a "Compaq 57", do you mean Compaq Presario CQ57?

Connect an external monitor to it. If that is okay, your laptop needs a new screen.

If external monitor is same as laptop screen, the graphics adapter inside the laptop is faulty. That often means changing the entire motherboard, so then you have to ask yourself "is it worth the expense" compared to the cost of low-priced new laptop.
