However I create a data disc, there is never an option to finalise & it will not play in a dvd player. The disc is readable on the computer. You could create dvd data discs on XP. Is there a default setting to close off the disc correctly? I can create other types of discs successfully?

Go here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows7/close-or-finalize-a-cd-or-dvd

Because Windows creates multi-session discs by default, with no option to create non multi-session ones, many of us (including myself), prefer to use third-party burning software where you can choose the type of disc you want to create before burning commences. When you elect to create a non multi-session disc, finalizing is done automatically.

If you want to try third-party burning software for greater versatility, there are a few free ones:

CDBurnerXP (works on Windows 7): http://cdburnerxp.se/en/home

Burnaware: http://www.burnaware.com/burnaware_free.html

Ashampoo Burning Studio: http://www.ashampoo.com/en/usd/pin/0710/Burning_Software/Ashampoo-Burning-Studio-6

But my preference is the commercial Nero Burning ROM, a firm favourite the world over:

Thanks for the quick reply. It was Nero 9 that started the original problem but I have an OEM copy, possibly I need the full version. I will try the programs that you suggested.

"It was Nero 9 that started the original problem"

It would have been useful to have known that to start with so I could have posted relevant links or information instead of me rattling on about Windows built-in burning utility.

All I have to add is that I steer clear of making multi-session discs as they can cause problems later on, especially when you want to read them on a different PC, and it's not unknown for one or more sessions to disappear even after finalizing. Also, multi-session writes are less reliable than regular, single-session writes.

DVD media is now cheap enough to make multi-session writing unnecessary anyway.
