I haven't heard the best of reviews about the reference design for 290x's. Should I wait for the aftermarket coolers or just suck it up and get the reference model?

I game mainly for BF3/4, Skyrim (with buttloads of mods and K ENB) and some MMOs from time to time. Looking to get a 1440p monitor.

I've heard reports about it taking a while for custom designs to come out. How long does it take for new designs to come out with a new card release?

Solution
I'd wait. Going on the reviews of yesterday on Toms', seem it can get too hot too quick and start to throttle itself. Asus, powercolor, MSI, etc will all be on it quickly and coming out with 2-3 fan extreme versions. 1 fan on a card like that on the reference, meh.

just wait for the one with custom cooler. how long? i don't know because we don't know how things going between amd and their board partners. anyways it seems to me that amd really get 290X tight to themselves. maybe to minimal any kind of info leakage about 290X or to keep tight control over the card especially around the power management (amd comes with new power management with 290X).

"I'd wait for the custom 290/290x as their value puts Nvidia to shame.

This is what happens when it gets a good cooler

And the custom cards are coming soon, likely within this month. But no eta.

And before you ask again, no eta."

If I was a betting man, and I'm not, I'd say very early 2014 or late 2013 for the aftermarket coolers..so yeah pretty soon.
