How do I connect my wired xbox controller to my pc?

Hi all,

I recently downloaded Skyrim for my PC. I have been interested in using a wired Xbox controller rather than the PC controls. I have WIndows 8, 64-bit operating system-- which I am told already has the drivers installed. Nonetheless, when I plug my wired device into my PC it shows up as unidentified (though it says it is working properly). I have also tried to download the WIndows 7 64-bit drivers as well. I have restared my computer as requested too. Nothing seems to be working; the ring on the controller just blinks and does not orientate to a quadrant. If anyone has an idea of what to do or what not to do I'd really appreciate it!

The only thing I can think of is your USB port working correctly? I do not have the wired controllers anymore but when I did I know that they worked fine in Windows 8 and I did not install any drivers at all. Even with my wireless controller hub I did not have to install any drivers at all Windows 8.1 just found and installed everything for me no problems.

I found another thread where people said that a plug and play will not work. I have a wireless controller, connected to a plug and play usb attached to my pc. I have tried various USB ports to no avail.

Sorry for posting and reposting here. My first time using this site and its' forum. Any insight to if this is the case or not would be great though.
