I was wondering since i got my KHX blu 8Gb (2x4) RAM off a friedn fro free, which was not that old, when should I replace or upgrade??? I was thinking of getting a dual 16gb set. I heard that you get better performance out of dual channel if that is what you MB supports. Also how can you tell when it starts to fail??

Cost of RAM will fluctuate as supply does as we saw a year or so back when some of the major Far East manufacturers got flooded out. Yes, outdated RAM, such as PC-100, PC-133, DDR, and DDR2 cost more because their supplies are running low and manufacturers are no longer making them.

Again, unless you're working on editing extremely large files (12GB video files for example) or vast computational programs, you'll never see a need for more than 8GB of RAM. As with the durability of RAM, you will most likely replace your entire system before you ever need more than 8GB of system RAM.

You replace your RAM when you replace the rest of your system. Of all the components in your computer, RAM is likely the least of your worries. Your motherboard will probably fail before your RAM does. Of course, if you start overclocking, then you can toss those statements right out the window and anything goes.

You will get better performance out of dual channel memory and I don't know of too many motherboards on the market today (other than the triple channel ones) that are not dual-channel. Personally, I don't see any need for the average person to exceed 8GB of RAM in their system.

When you start getting memory dumps and blue-screens, then it's time to start checking your system components. The easiest place to start is usually the RAM.

I only ask this because I noticed at some stores the price of DDR3 ram went up about $20 though newegg still has the same prices and I noticed as ram types get older they get more expensive. Like ddr2 2gb is about $40 right now so I thought it would be best if I were to upgrade to 16gb it would be best to do so in the next 6 months. just rumours so far but i heard the price of DDR3 will increase in 6 months
