Choosing the right memory

What is the best way to choose memory for a particular motherboard? Lets assume that I have a motherboard and I know that I want DDR3 1600 in a 4 GB kit to run dual channels. Lets also assume that I will be purchasing my memory from NewEgg. I look at the Memory support list from the motherboard website. Do I need to match the EXACT model number from the mfg website to the memory model number on the retail website? I have tried this process and it seems that a large number of the listed memory on the mboard site do not show up on NewEgg. Some are slightly off, and some, when you copy/paste the number into the search box for NewEgg turns up a dozen or more results. Is this process really this "hit or miss" or is there another way that this is generally done?

Yes and if it is for a Intel system make sure it is no higher than 1.5volts as well.

So, if I went to an online retailer and entered the following search parameters, I could essentially pick from any of the results and be reasonably assured that it would work in my system?

Type : 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM
Capacity : 8GB (2 x 4GB)
Speed : DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)
Multi-channel Kit : Dual Channel Kit
