I have a 640gb wd black for storage and was wondering if I could remove the data from it, place it on the desktop, buy a 1tb, format it and then put the 640gb stuff onto the 1tb. Is it that simple?

Define 'stuff'.
If you mean just regular files, sure. If you mean the OS and applications, that's different. You could use one of the many migration tools for that.

What is the current configuration of this PC? What drives, how large, what is on each?

If that is his only drive, yes. From his description, it is not clear which drive he's talking about...:)

That is what I am presuming! If the drive is full I am hard pressed to believe he would have space for 640GB in his desktop folder on the OS drive.
If it is a desktop then the simple solution is to add another drive.

I have my OS on my SSD. the 640gb is purely just music and random crap. Maybe a game or two, but i'll just uninstall them.

Then your desktop folder is on the SSD!
Being a desktop then you can just add the second drive as a storage, you should have spare SATA connectors.

I do have the sata connectors, I just wanted to get rid of my 640gb for now because the 1tb is better than my 640gb, but I guess I'll just add the 1tb and keep my 640gb, so now i'll have over a terabyte and half along with my SSD lol. thanks for ur help guys

Makes the most sense, then you do not have to uninstall and reinstall programs. You can as well then transfer what you want and then remove the 640GB drive.
