My old HP Pavilion a600y desktop has just gone to lowest screen resolution. When I went to Display Properties under Control Panel and reset to a higher resolution and then hit Apply the computer immediately restarts and still has lowest resolution. I have re-installed the drivers for the monitor and graphics card but it did no good.

More about : screen resolution

Run a disk check first: right click on the c drive in explorer, goto properties / tools. It needs a reboot for the c drive. But backup your personal data first. There might be a problem with your disk.

I ran the disk check. Still got the same result when I tried to change the screen resolution. This all started after I had run System Mechanic. One of the recommendations was to turn off some things during startup ( gave me a list that I could choose) . Now I can't get back to that list because resolution is too big and I can't get past the System Mechanic welcome screen.

Press Start an search for "msconfig", goto the system start tab and see what is disabled, but might be needed and enable it again.

Thanks

Did that, set back to normal startup which then showed everything checked to start. Rebooted but still have same problems. Will take to computer shop tomorrow.

Try setting the dpi settings to lowest to be able to see complete window contents. Go to personalize->display->set custom display settings. Re-installing the graphics card drivers may also help in safe mode.
