Hi. I'm looking to build, but have questions. Due to the cost of i7-3960x and i7-4960x, I'm looking at i7-4930. I read that Asus Rampage IV Extreme is not necessary if you don't plan to put in multiple cards. For starters, I will only have one: Asus GeForce GTX Titan 6GB Video Card and maybe that's all I'll ever have.

So there is one question about the mobo, but also read that going all fans without liquid cooling means the RAM touched the cpu fan. I'd rather not go the liquid cooling route, so best fans?

I don't have to get that mobo, but I liked it even though it needs bios flash upon receiving it.

CPU doesn't include a heatsink, so does it matter which one to get?

8 x 240-pin DIMM with a max of 64, so am I losing anything if I go with G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1866 Memory? I read somewhere that it is best to use all the slots for dual channel?

Tentatively looking at http://pcpartpicker.com/p/1R8ZL but the cost is creeping up there and it's far from a complete build.

Sorry I have so many questions, but I was hoping someone would please be so kind as to make suggestions and answer my questions?

Thank you for your wisdom and valuable time.

RIVE owner here,

1. The RIVE is a great product for overclocking enthusiasts. Most X79 motherboards handle Crossfire and SLI identically and without issue, but if you want to overclock without frustration, go with the RIVE. There's no advantage to using the RIVE for just SLI/Crossfire

2. The DIMM slots are positioned to either side of the CPU socket. There's enough distance between them that regular low profile DIMMs will not interfere with the CPU cooler. However, DIMMs with obnoxiously large heatsinks (I'm looking at you Corsair and G.Skill) may interfere with some air coolers. The simple solution is to just get low profile memory.

3. The LGA2011 chips do not include a reference heat sink but it's generally a good idea to get a liquid cooler over an air cooler. They're quite power efficient, but overclocking can drag the power consumption up into the 230+ watt range. This is doubly important on the RIVE because overclocking is just so damn easy. If you're not comfortable building a custom loop, consider getting an all-in-one solution

4. The LGA2011 platform uses a quad-channel memory architecture, not dual channel. To take full advantage of this you need to install memory modules in multiples of 4 like so:

4x4GiB for 16GiB

4x8GiB for 32GiB

8x4GiB for 32GiB

8x8GiB for 64GiB

If you install only two DIMMs, you will be castrating half of your memory bandwidth.

I recommend the following 16GiB kit as it plays extremely well with the RIVE while maintaining a low profile and high performance

Install two for 32GiB, but you may have to bump the voltage to the memory controller a tad bit after installation.

5. Consider ditching the titan and replacing it with either a pair of 780s or some of the new offerings from AMD. The performance/price on the Titan is very low
