Hi.. I am experiencing a frustrating issue that I am unable to resolve through research on google.

I am 21 and live with my parents, and we both connect to a Wi-fi router that is very close in proximity to our computers. We have comcast. The router is linksys and isn't that new but is still one that is very highly regarded on amazon, etc.

Whenever I am on the internet and they awake their computer from sleep - the internet cuts out for both of us. Obviously I am the only one to notice it much because by the time their computer has loaded the wifi network has reset and is fine. It's strange because when it happens - our network name goes from for example, "familyhome" to something like "linksys-ow-1453" for about 2 minutes. I can reconnect to this "linksys-ow-1453" without our WPA2 password and eventually it changes back to "familyhome" after I connect to "linksys-ow-1453".

I have tried flushing the dns and moving where the router is plugged in and that's about it. I don't really know what else to try. Could it have something to do with the influx of power into the computer (when its awoken) interrupting the router? This ONLY happens when the awake their computer. I have not tried with a different network adapter because I can't see why that would be the issue.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.. This is SO frustrating when I am playing a game or using the internet and getting cut off. Or is this something I should contact Comcast about? Yet I don't think they would have a solution for this.

Thanks!!!!

Solution
try updating the router firmware if it out of date. check to see if both computer are on the same outlet/usp/power strip/breaker. if there sharing outlet/power strips you may be pulling to much power and having slight brown out. try moving the router to another outlet to check.

One trick I've learned about routers is you never want to update the firmware unless you are having a problem. You indicated your router isn't new, have you tried a firmware upgrade?

I doubt this is a comcast problem, Your router changing the SSID to a default value 'linksys-ow-xxxx' is an indicator that your router rebooted/factory defaulted. Because you said it eventually changes back to familyhome, that makes me think it just rebooted.

Also what model router do you have?
Does this happen all the time or just some of the time?
Are you using the correct power brick that came with the router? (I know its a weird question, but if you use the wrong brick and it doesn't supply the right power, subtle changes such as adding another PC on the network, might be the packet that breaks the camels back.)

Things I would try:
If its wireless N - You could try setting it to Wireless G for a few days to see if the problem stops
Factory default your router and start over with a new config.

I liked some of the things this website offered in terms of debugging.

Sorry I don't have a solution for you.

Thank you both for the input and I will try troubleshooting based off what you guys said. I am assuming we are using the correct brick, the issue happens every, single, time. But it hasn't always in the past... it's been doing it for a year now I guess. The model of the router is linksys wireless G, broadband router, 2.4Ghz, 802.11g, and by Cisco Systems of course.

Thanks again and I will work off this input.
