I built a brand new system out of the box for my mother with the following specs:
MoBo: MSI 760GM-P23 (FX)
CPU: AMD FX 6100 3.3 Ghz
PSU: Rosewill 500w
OS: Windows 7 x64 Ultimate

I finished getting the machine together yesterday, got the OS installed, all drivers, utilities and antivirus installed, and got all the data transferred from her old machine. Everything was working fine, so left this morning and came home. When mom got home from work, she hard powered the computer off while it was asleep to rearrange her desk and when she turned it back on, she was presented with a menu that was as follows:

(paraphrased) windows was not shut down properly and may need to repair.

1) Start Windows normally
2) Startup Repair (recommended)

No matter which option is chosen, the same thing happens after a sort. If option 1 is chosen, it gets to the windsow 7 logo and hangs indefinitely. If option 2 is chosen, the loading files bar fills up quickly to 100% and hangs indefinitely. The kicker to all of this is that if you boot the system from the Win 7 disc and choose any of the options, it is the same song and dance.

I consider myself a technical veteran, but by no means an expert and this has me extremely puzzled. Any assistance at all would be appreciated.

Well, I solved this on my own inadvertently. I had my mom reseat all of the minor components (ram, cables, and the like) and it worked like a dream. Anyone with a similar problem might consider this if you haven't already.

Thank you for your rapid response. I can't remember the model # offhand but it's a Toshiba 1 TB SATA 3 gb/s or 6 gb/s.

Well, I thought that the problem was solved. I got a call from my mom today that she has this issue every time that the computer restarts, although now the boot disc will repair the problem and actually get into windows. I told her not to power the PC off any more, but I am still incredibly confused. Any help would be appreciated, again.

If you're going to run SeaTools with Windows running get the Windows version. The DOS version would be used as a boot disk. As to Memtest, it only runs as a boot disk (though this problem is more consistent with HDD issues).

There are remote assistance apps available, like

The HDD passed all SeaTools tests, but my mom has no clue how to burn a boot disc...i had her back up her data and do a clean install of windows and so far, things appear to be working. I'm having her hold off on rebooting until I can get down there and do the memtest myself, as sleep mode has no negative affects at this time. I'm really hoping that this was just a bad install and not a manufacturer error. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
