7870 crossfire in pci x16 and x4 and Performance loss

All of the data I see on the 16 and 4 slotting is old.

I have a 970a-G43 and wondering if it is going to be a big performance decrease

I am NOT going to sell my cards and buy a single one.

And I would rather not go through a motherboard upgrade and transfer if the 16 and 4 is not so bad.

You should be fine. It'll perform better than a single card, but you still won't get optimal performance. There will be some loss.
