okay, so today i got my new fx-6300 processor and installed everything with no problems. (i upgraded from the fx-4100 because i wanted a little more out of my gaming experience and had a little extra money.) i did hours of searching around on the internet to see how most people went about overclocking this processor and i noticed that a lot of people were achieving 4.5ghz and so on. so i first tried to over clock with amd overdrive... (if what i say is obviously wrong please don't chew me for it. Ive never overclocked before.) first i disabled the turbo core and then inched the cpu 0 core multiplier up until i reached 4ghz. then i moved my cpu vid up from 1.1750 to 1.1875. the first thing i noticed was that my windows seven theme, which was black, had gone back to original light blue. but i didn't think anything of it.
after that i went and tried the stability test set for an hour. it did not take 2 SECONDS for the computer to blue screen. since then i have tried everything i could think of.
i turned off cool and quiet.
i went into the bios and tried overclocking there.
i tried not changing the voltage
i tried just overclocking the turbo core.
etc.

and yet every time i do a stress test, i get bsod. please help me understand.

is it my voltage? or is my chip just not up to it (i know all chips are different)
i don't think it is the temp because usually the highest Ive gotten is around 43c on idle (it wont bsod on idle or if i don't stress test)

thanks a lot and sorry for having to read so much :/

my specs are:
psu is 400 watt
mobo is ga-78lmt-s2
8gb ram
R7770 xfx ghost graphics
four case fans

People, figure out the problem before trying to solve it...

First off, what error code are you getting when you BSOD? You can get it easily using BlueScreenView (the Bug_Check_Code/Bug_Check_String attributes). Based on your description though, I'd *assume* 0x124: WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR, which would indicate an unstable OC, likely due to voltage/temps.

Overclocking with a stock cooler will put him at serious risk of damaging/breaking his cpu. Overclocking with a stock cooler is unwise and needs to be addressed first regardless of what his reason for getting a BSOD during overclocking is. He shouldn't be overclocking in the first place without an aftermarket cooler.
I guess you should ask yourself...

no, it isnt the one that came with the processor but im not sure what kind it is. it is an amd heatsink that came with my pc from ibuypower

Try to figure out the brand and model of whatever cooling solution they gave you. That is one of the important factors in overclocking.

Anyway, your motherboard is another weak-point. It only has a 3+1 phase Voltage Regulator Module (VRM) with no heatsink on it. A lot of people recommend having at least double to have and maintain a decent overclock. If you do overclock, I would keep it light/small.

I would also try to find out the make/brand of the PSU, more just to be safe, than anything else.

here is the heatsink that i have, sorry this is all i could find :/
http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-AMD-FX-8100-8120-8150-8320-8350-Heatsink-Fan-Copper-Cooling-AM2-AM3-AM3-/221302594644?pt=US_CPU_Fans_Heatsinks&hash=item3386a99c54
as far as the psu it is a soly tech ATX 400w switching power supply MODEL:SL-f400

i also found this thread of people discussing the heatsink i have, saying it is capable of 4.4ghz on the eight-core http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2296689

That is, indeed, a stock AMD cooler, although the beefiest model offered. Despite that, and what some others may say, I still don't recommend overclocking on it. Even if it manages to handle the heat, the noise will drive you nuts.

I can't find much information on your PSU, other than Soly Tech makes their own PSUs.

I guess you should ask yourself this: is it worth the risk of breaking and having to buy another cpu (your warantee doesn't cover damage caused overclocking) just to save the small amount of money that a budget aftermarket cooler costs? Cooler master hyper 212 EVO -look it up. It's much cheaper than replacing a cpu.
