A week ago I reformatted my desktop pc using a usb stick because my dvd drive stopped reading discs a year ago. It was working great for 2 days, until I started getting blue screens of death. The bsod's progressed to the point where now I cant even load windows.

When I try to reformat using usb again I get the error message:

file: windows\system32\boot\winload.exe
status: 0xc0000001
info: the selected entry could not be loaded because the application is missing or corrupt

Im wondering if I buy a cheap dvd drive, can I just plug it in and use it to reformat windows or does it need to install software to function? I cant load windows so I cant install any software.

help

The DVD software is probably only for playback functions in Windows, or maybe Lightscribe. You don't need either to be able re-install Windows. The thin red cable is the SATA cable, the other should be the 4 pin power (Molex) connector. I think the m8125x has a flap on the front covering the DVD drive, but even so it is normally only a standard drive under there.

The only other option is to buy an external USB DVD drive and boot from that. However I think it's better to replace the faulty internal unit.

Good luck with your repair.

You should be able to pick up a new DVD drive for about $25. They don't need device drivers to work. If the PC is less that 5 years old you shouldn't have any issues changing the SATA plug and power connections over to the new DVD drive, there aren't even any jumpers to change.

I hope this helps.

my computer is hp media tv center desktop m8125x, I think it was made in 2007 it came with vista.....i saw a guide on installing a dvd drive that mentioned software is why I asked....

I have taken my computer apart before...there is 2 wires connecting to the dvd drive one is a red thin cable the other is something else..

so what youre saying is i can just buy a dvd and plug it in, and it should read my windows dvd without needing to install software?

i just want the cheapest dvd drive with burning capabilities.....
