Can I Underclock a CPU for better TDP?

Hey guys, I recently purchased a FX9590 on sale with a Sabertooth 990FX R2.0. It has occured to me that I may be having some hard time with heat and power consumption. Theoretically, if I reduced the clock to say...4.5 or 4.2, would I be able to manage the heat and power consumption to almost be better than an FX8350 a the same clocks? I knwo the CPU is essentially an 8350 with handpicked parts...so since I already have the bastard, can I make lemonade out of lemons?

I honestly couldn't tell you, having never tried to underclock before. My guess is that you may see some improvement, but I doubt you could ever be 1:1 with an 8350. My guess is that even on Auto your voltages will stay higher. Honestly, if the 9590 is a handpicked and built chip, it should be able to take the extra heat and power without a degradation in lifespan.

And if this is possible, could someone please give me (or refer me to) relatively detailed instructions on how to do so? I would really like to not send this back to the supplier for an 8350 simply because I am worried about power consumption and heat. Its a pretty good processor for the price I bought it at, and I would really like to be able to still use it.

Yes, you can although I'm not sure how much of a difference you will notice in terms of power consumption and temperature change. AMD chips run hot and hungry. That said check out this link 8350 Overclocking Where all your bios settings are may differ a bit, but you're doing the same thing as overclocking, but making the values lower than before. Leave your voltage settings on auto though or you'll have problems.
