Greetings all.

I recently acquired an MSI R7850-2GD5/OC card and tried to install it on to my fairly recent H87M-D3H motherboard. Unfortunately, through all my debugging attempts, it appears that the card refuses to work on the PCIe x16 slot. I tried putting the card into a PCIe x16 slot of an old Intel DP965LT motherboard and upon booting the computer, I can at least see video output (although it is all low resolution since I have not installed drivers yet, but that is fine). If I put the card into the PCIe x4 slot of the H87M-D3H, I can see video output. I am fairly certain it is not a problem with selecting the correct slot to displayed, as I have also tried various combinations.

I updated the BIOS of the H87M-D3H to the latest one appearing on the support page dated 2013/08/05. No luck with the PCIe x16 slot either.

Has anybody else ran into this problem and know how to fix it? Otherwise, the glaringly obvious is that my PCIe x16 slot is broken. :??:

Thanks for the suggestions.

I have tried re-seating the card numerous times and still no luck on any kind of video output. It is pretty snug too as far as I can tell.

I take it you mean the GPU when you were talking about bent pins and not my actual CPU? I am assuming this would require me to open up the card to have a look, though it sounds risky.

Another thing I forgot to add to my original post was the fact I was able to take an old Geforce 7950GT and use it in the PCIe x16 slot to get video output, which then points the blame at the card. Ahh, so confusing.

It turns out that when I tried forcing the PCIe slot configuration option available to 'Gen2' in the BIOS that I am able to get basic video output happening on both the HDMI and DVI-I outputs of the card. I am not sure why this works, because the card is specified as supporting PCIe x16 3.0. Thought I should post this fix (temporary?) in case it helps anyone else.

After driver installation, I am now running into a different problem with a crash (i.e. the rather prominently known GPU crash with vertical lines) that happens after playing a game for a while. So far, underclocking and lowering details have made it somewhat more stable. Though I suppose for now, my original problem is some what fixed.

Just wanted to update this with my resolution in case anybody out there is experiencing problems like I have originally described.

To save yourself losing a lot of sanity, I would recommend simply RMA-ing the card. I ended up going back to the store I that bought my MSI R7850-2GD5/OC from, and a chap there happily refunded me my credit. I paid an additional thirty dollars or so to nab the MSI N660-2GD5/OC, took it home, plugged it in, downloaded the drivers and presto, everything works.

While I am sure there are happy AMD Radeon customers out there, this is another lesson for me as to why to never buy their cards again.
