Your CPU could definitely be holding you back, mobile chips are clocked lower to save on power, and Rome Total War can only use one CPU core. Make sure you play the game with the high performance power profile on, and also make sure Turbo Boost is enabled in your BIOS to allow your CPU to clock itself higher in single threaded applications.

On the other hand, it could simply be that with the really large armies in your modded game you have hit the limits of the game engine, and it will simply choke with that many units on the field, no matter what hardware you have. That's the risk you take when modding, especially when upping the unit caps in strategy games, you may hit a point where the engine simply can't keep track of that many...

even for a game of 2005?the cpu im using its duo core cpu with hyperthreading and its not normal to cannot play this game at all.... :(...and i think that cpu outclass the preffered requriments of this game...:(

Yeah I'm afraid your computer's way too slow for the Total War franchise...

An i5 CPU with 2.3 ghz is quite slow I'm afraid. My CPU? I consider mine pretty slow, and untouched in terms of overclocking, it has a stock speed of 3.8 Ghz. There's no way you could even run an oldies classic like Rome: Total War(2005) on that. You'll need atleast 3.0 Ghz in order to run it smoothly.

A GT 540m is also quite low.

3GB of DD3 is...To put it bluntly, almost nothing in order to play video games. You will need at least double that to run any game smoothly with reasonable graphics. Personally? I have 8GB DDR3, and I run most games pretty smoothly on ultra settings, granted I set my resolution to 1240 instead of 1920x1080

My advice? Don't load your poor laptop with this kinda stress...I'd consider investing in a newer laptop.
