I have a Samsung Story Station 2TB External Hard Drive, which has been working fine since I bought it earlier in the year.

Recently I did a clean re-install of my Windows 7 (64 bit) OS, with all the updates along with SP1. Before I did this I made sure that I backed up all my personal files, audio and video media on to the external HDD. BUT...

Since I re-installed Windows 7 I can't access the external HDD. Every time I power it up I get the message: "You need to format the disk in Drive L before you can use it. Do you want to format it now?"

If I try to click on it in Windows Explorer I get the warning: "L:\ is not Accessible... Access is Denied". The properties shows that it is FULL!

Yet in Disk Management it is recognized as: "DANNY'S BACK-UP ( L: ) Simple Basic NTFS Healthy (Active, Primary Partition)" This also shows that about 55% of the HDD is free with the rest used for my backed up files.

My whole life is backed up on that drive... HELP!!!!!!

Solution
Simply the OS is unable to read the ex drive so giving you that lame excuse.

1. Try to plug and unplug the drive over and over again properly, and try it on different ports front/back. It will get detected.

2. Try it on safe-mode, first start the PC on safe-mode then plug the drive.

3. Try to uninstall the drive from Device Manager, then search for Hardware changes under Action menu.

4. Try it on another system or another OS.

5. Try data recovery software's : http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec

Good luck.
