My Documents folder is gone from Documents and Settings after installing windows 8 over windows7

I would expect your Documents folder to be in c:\users\[username]
not c:\Documents & Settings\[user name]
can you check for other users ?
can you see c:\windows.old\users\[user name] ?
(this may be hidden)
(windows 8.1 upgrade from 8.0 makes a backup in Windows.old I presume 7 to 8 also makes a backup of c:\users\ .........)

when you install windows you are given option to save files amd folders to a folder called windows.old
location of folder is in root of your drive if its not there it means you did not choose option to have files and folders backed up
