Hi,

I'm looking to make a PC build for gaming. I've looked at the NVIDIA Geforce GTX 770 SLI, or Radeon HD 7990. Both options had people recommend me to get an i7 processor. To save money, I was getting an i5 4670K. Will getting an i5 limit the performance of the Video Cards?

Also, I've been recommended to get 12GB memory for either card. Is 8GB enough for gaming. I'm not going to be doing much video editing or multi-tasking.

No, getting an i5 will be perfectly fine and shouldn't affect your GPU performance.

Update: 8GB of RAM will be fine for most situations. I would start out with 8 and move up to 16 if you find yourself running low on RAM.

Thanks! I just need them for "future proofing". I honestly don't feel like upgrading, so might as well get what I can now, right? Oh and what about RAM?

If it helps, I am just using this for gaming and not multi-tasking and video editing. However, I might get VMware to get Linux with my Windows. Does VMware need a high amount of RAM?

If you're using VMware you may want to give yourself a bit more ram, VMWare shares your resources, so if you want windows to have 8GB and Linux to have 8, then you need 16GB, so take that into account when you're deciding. You also shouldn't be running VMWare at the same time as you're Gaming.

With how my budget works, I guess I'll have to chose one or the other. Either wait for Linux to get game support. Or risk Windows' slow, virus filled interface for games. VMware will require some work too. Decisions decisions...

Well, I don't think windows is a bad OS, you just have to pay more attention to what you're doing, as for linux and gaming, wait until SteamOS is released, that's going to be designed for gaming. Don't use VMWare for games, it won't be anywhere near as good for gaming.

Wait. Is SteamOS its own operating system, or an add-on for game support to linux (ubuntu)? If yes, will it include every game, or specific titles? As for windows, I have windows 7 (on my old one) and I cannot tell you how slow it is (HDD fragmentation and whatnot) and how many performance hampering viruses I caught, which slips by my antivirus (McCafee). The worst part is, it's not free like linux. It's not bad, you're correct. I just think linux is better, but without game support, it's a tough descision.

SteamOS will be its own distro, and I believe how they are going to make it work is to provide more support for linux game development, but you'll have access to your linux games, and I believe you can stream games from a windows computer for the non linux games.

Windows is a high maintenance OS, and yes you have to pay for it, but like any computer, if you take care of it and keep it well maintained, everything will work smoothly. Also, why buy AV like Mcafee? Windows Security Essentials is by far the best AV for Windows. If you're getting a lot of viruses, I'd look at your internet habits, I haven't had anything but false positives in years, and I don't run a separate AV.

From what I know, SteamOS will boost the number of games supported by Linux before launch, and will continue their support until every game can be supported by the distro. Correct?

Yea. Windows is high maintenance (I have Win 7). But it's very bland, and I'm a little skeptical about getting Win 8, even though it's faster. Linux (Ubuntu and Mint) are more interactive and a little more efficient (in everyday use, not gaming). All-in-one-click updates, squiggly windows etc. Silver linings, you know? For everyday use, I only use steam, downloading documents, and youtube. Pretty much it. I don't see how I'm getting viruses, but thanks for suggesting WSE.

SteamOs won't continue support until every game is supported, chances are most AAA titles that don't have linux support won't gain it in the future. SteamOS is a move by Valve to push developers into developing for Linux, but whether or not it will catch on is a big question. Windows will maintain its status as the go to OS for gaming for many years to come.

Don't take me as a sole Windows user, I love linux and would use it 100% if it had majority share for gaming. Windows 8 (despite many critics of the new interface) is honestly quite nice to use, and once you get used to it is incredibly well designed. It does run a bit more power hungry than linux, but it isn't anywhere near as bad as say the WinXP gap was. Real strides have been made.

I guess my point would be that (I'm sure this will offend some linux power users) I believe that Windows is closing the gap, and while it lacks some of linux's nicest features, Windows 8 is a really nice well balanced OS if you have to choose the evil empire.

I guess it can't hurt to switch to Linux (SteamOS) after it has been developed for more gaming oriented users (it's free anyways). Even though I'm more used to it, all I'm concerned about is that $100 price tag for Windows. My incoming PC build is already expensive as it is. :(

Yeah the price always blows, it's the worst part. There are tons of ways to get discounts though. If you have a student ID or are part of the military you can often get it discounted to about 10 dollars.

Why Microsoft ($$$$$$$)? Anyway, since I have neither qualification, I'm stuck.
