Installing an old disk OS on a new PC

Just spent several days getting the run around from Microsoft on Windows 8. I've given up and I am no longer interested in getting a copy of that software. I'm building a PC and I'm curious if I can use the copy of Windows 7 that I got for my first laptop and install that onto my new PC? The copy is on a disk, not an HDD, so I don't think I have to worry about not having the same specs as my laptop. I'm also running Win7 PRO so having 16GB of RAM in my new build shouldn't have an effect on the rig...? Is it safe to do? Or do I just need to fork out cash for a new OS?

Thanks

Legally, no. that copy of Windows 7 is locked to that laptop. Only the retail full version of Windows 7 can be installed on a different PC than the one you bought it. Windows 8 doesn't have that issue. Also, so OEM copies from laptops or name brand PC's won't install on a PC that doesn't have the correct BIOS ID's.

What problems did you have about Windows 8? I've been running it since the preview with almost no issues. Went like 45 days without a reboot.

I work retail and took some courses with Microsoft in an attempt to earn a copy of Win8 PRO. They originally gave me a digital download copy, which I can't use for a computer that has no OS. I contacted a support number who sent me to a department who sent me to a department who gave me an email, who sent me to a department.. etc. Several days later and I finally reached someone who was willing to help but only if I outright bought Windows 8 PRO. Since I don't have much cash and I'm saving for my GPU I think I'll just buy a copy of Win7 Home Premium x64 for about $100.
