Windows 7/64 shuts down and restarts when I try to play Batman Arkham Origins within 5 and 30 seconds after I get to the screen that asks to play Arkham Origins or Arkham Origins online. I have an I7 930 in an Asus P6T-SE MB 6 Gig ram. The power supply is an Apevia ATX CB-700W. I upgraded my video card a couple of weeks ago to an Nvidia GTX 770. I loaded speed fan and was getting CPU temps over 55°C, up to 65°C so I took the heat sink off cleaned it and put fresh thermal paste on, which lowered the temperature significantly. Now it's hovering around 46°C and rarely goes over 55°C. But that did not change the problem. Works fine for Skyrim and Fallout 3, even at the same time, but Batman Origins dies at the same point, give or take 30 seconds, every time. Can anyone recommend a solution? After eliminating the thermal issue (I think) I would expect what remains is either a power supply issue, a buggy game, or a the new video card has a problem.

Could you recommend a plan for narrowing down the possible problems? I have up to date drivers for most things. I was thinking about updating the MB bios, but that seems like an unlikely cause. p.s. the system was running well for about a couple of years, and still works fine as long as I avoid this one new title.

Thanks

Batman Arkham Origin couldn't cause the shut down as it doesn't temper anything with the OS or hardware so I assume it has something to do with your system temp or driver issues.

I say try updating your bios since your video card is quite new and Batman Arkham Origin uses PhysX unlike your other game. If you can, run Batman in window mode and monitor your system temp to see if it is a heat issue.

Edit: DO you see the shutdown screen or is a force shut down?

No shut down screen, Just goes black as I hear the fans spinning down, Beeps and restarts automatically. The game is not fully launched and the splash screen is in a windowed mode so I can watch the temperature during load. It was getting up to 65°C before I redid the thermal paste, now it doesn't get much past 57°C. I will update the bios and see if that fixes it.

700W should be enough unless you have SLI

edit: if it doesn't work, go to Control Panel > System and Security > Event Viewer. Try to find the log file occurs right before it shut down and when it boots up.

As a matter of fact, do you get a windows message when you log back on?

No SLI. I looked in the event viewer and it is giving a kernel-power critical error which give the following message:

'The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.'

Which doesn't tell me much, other then what happened. When it restarts it does say windows shut down unexpectedly and asks what mode I should boot in. I always say normal.

Interestingly I thought I would open the case and record audio of the system as it shuts down. It has a high pitched buzzing that starts up and could either be the fan blades touching something or perhaps something else. Is there a way to upload a file to the forum so I could share it? I recorded a second time and oddly it was stable enough to get past the intro screen and I could move around, but it died when I tried to exit. I also tried to log the temperature using Speedfan, but didn't select anything to record. But now that I've figured it out I could get the temperature profile too.

orokimarru,

Could you provide your system specs so we can see if there is something in common between our systems? Also I recommend installing Speedfan to check the temperature profile on your CPUs and GPUs. Also could you give specifics of when it shuts down for you? Only in Batman, Arkham Origins, or while running other apps as well?

Thanks,

Try doing a fresh install of windows....i guess the game file damaged some kernel files....
To be safe,i would recommend you not to install game in C drive but in other drive...

New information: I found a second program that causes the unexpected shutdown/restart. I went to 'Control Panel --> All Control Panel Items --> Performance Information and Tools' and ran the 'Windows Experience Index Refresh' Which went through and started hitting the Video card pretty good. I heard it start to buzz as I had when loading Batman Arkham Origins. I stepped through Direct3D Aero Assessment, then Batch Assessment, then Alpha Blend and finally Texture Load on which it died. I feel like I'm zeroing in on either a manufacturing issues with the board, or a power instability in my power supply.

I think my next option is to try a new power supply. Are these a standard size or do I need to make sure what I get will fit in the same space as what I took out. I think I'll see if I can borrow one first before laying out some cash.

After working with a friend with more knowledge then I, we resolved the issue. The 700 Watt Apevia power supply was faulty. It worked well for 2 years under the previous configuration, but under the higher load of the new graphics card was found wanting. I replaced the power supply with an 850 Watt Thermaltake and everything has been rock solid so far. Thanks for everyone's help.
