So when you go to Control pannel and then Sound there is no HDMI device in in the main list? If there is Click on it and set a default. If not then try updating your video card drives since those also control the sound for the HDMI.

Looks like it has a Nvidia G105M video card. It does support 7.1 sound as well. Do you know what drivers you have? If you go to the programs and Features and look for nvida dispaly drivers it will have a number like 321.24 or something like that.

Also check your device manager to make sure there isn't anything with a yellow ! on it or a Red X

I'm using windows 8 on my Acer Aspire E1-522 (not sure if thats any use, im not very technical) but i have just gone to watch basketball through my laptop via HDMI cable to my TV. This has never been a problem before, until now. The sound only seems to be coming from the laptop itself and not the tv... I go in to the 'manage audio' bit and it just says the HDMI cable is not connected with a red downwards arrow, even though it is connected because i can see the picture on my tv clearly, just no sound... Please help!
