m using Windows Xp Sp3, I have an external Hard Drive connected to a USB port. recently i experienced a problem with some of files in 3 folders, "Can not copy the file: Access is denied" and "An error occured applying attributes to the file: Access is denied". Please help.

Solution
i see, well, I would run "chkdsk /r /f d:" d: of course being whatever letter is assigned to your drive, filesystem errors can cause permission issues, this can occur from a hard shutdown or whatever

the typical scenario where the permissions error is genuine is when files from one PC are read by another (differing SIDs) so if it is truly just a permissions issue this article here should help you with the affected folders and files

Interesting, i had the same issue your having, and it ended up being a connection issue, the drive was disconnecting but in a way that it stayed open in windows but everything i tried to open gave me that same error

Just to clarify the port on the motherboard is an IDE port, and you have a chip to convert it to a SATA connection on the HDD?
