Best RAM for OC'ing with i704770K + Maximus VI Hero ?

I am planning on building a new gaming rig for myself, and I have everything basically planned except for the RAM. I intend on overclocking the CPU with water cooling, to get the highest clocks. Is it actually easier to overclock with 2 sticks of RAM vs the HERO's 4 sticks maximum? If so will the amount of memory on each stick affect it's ability to be overclocked? I'm pretty sure I want some G.Skill TridentX's but not sure what frequency or if 2x8gb or 4x4gb. Thanks for all help.

Do you have a particular frequency goal in mind for an end result, that in part will play heavily, for the highest overall freq OCed to would prob want the 2800/12 2x8GB set of Trident's. if looking more for the best OC from base freq then the 1600/7 Tridents..........for the most part the Trident (starting at 1600/7, simply stairstep up at the performance level CLs

1600/7 1866/8 2133/9 2400/10 2666/11 2800/12 though they also have a looser 2666/12 set

GSkill TridentX would be good choice.

And 2x8GB will be better choice, leaving further upgrade scope in regards of another 2x8GB i.e. to avail the maximum memory your board supports.

It's always easier to overclock using 2 sticks of RAM.
Most the world records for overclocks are on motherboards with circuitry that is physically smaller in dimension(s).

The reason for this is that the electricity / electrons have less space to cover between points within the computer hardware, as such you can force the buses to switch at a faster speed (clock rate in Hertz).

Extra voltage also helps transistors switch faster, however the heat generated does not follow a linear increase with clock speed AND voltage. As such you need to dissipate that extra heat.

Make a shortlist of say 5 to 25 dual-channel kits you are looking at and we can critique each one depending on your goal. (e.g. high memory overclock with 'slow' timings, or moderate memory overclock with 'faster' timings, etc.).

All companies that sell memory will have very good packs (usually) and they ALL have some very terrible ones on the market too, especially for the asking price as it's a buyer beware market.

Merely by asking you've put yourself ahead of the pack.

I'd probably be happy with 2133/9. My current AMD gaming rig has an absolutely horrible RAM speed. I'm embarrassed to say what it is. Do you think I could get 2133/9 with 4x8gb if I chose to upgrade in the future?

Not sure what CPU you have - but as to your Question - check my sig, I've got the Hero also and am running 32GB or 2666 (have taken it to 2800, and have had the 2800/12 sticks in it with no problem), if you have the 4670K think 2666 or 2800 might be tops.....best buy right now is the 2400/10 Tridents in either 16 or 32GB - it then jumps to 2666 and even more as you go higher, the ICs for 2666 and up are still on the rare side
