what is the best card my pc can handle

wanna upgrade my card and need info.i got amd phenom II x4 940 3ghz,6gb ram,64 bit os,radeon hd 6950 2gb.any suggestions would help

6GB RAM are enough for any gaming build PC.
In your budget ill buy a R9 280x video card and a good 550W - 600W PSU from, Corsair Seasonic, XFX,Antec.
If you like you can go with Nvidia 760 and the same good brands PSU's and you spend less money.
With any of two variants your gaming experience will be better than what you have now.
r9 280x >760.
