No one makes a non-reference R9 290X yet, so they are all the same, exactly the same except for branding/stickers.

Well, I don't have any insider information. Based on previous releases, I would say a few weeks to months before you'll see some. I would imagine that the major brands (ASUS, MSI, Gigabyte) will introduce their open-air non-reference designs and have them ready for sale before the X-mas season, because that's their biggest opportunity.

Wouldn't be a bad idea. I for one, actually prefer reference coolers, because they dump hot air directly outside, plus you can leave it quiet by toggling the BIOS switch to quiet mode.
