Have Windows XP Pro on HP Pavilion
(32 bit) w/ AMD Athlon(B) 2800+ 2.08 GHz (Advanced 333MHz front side bus) CPU. I want to upgrade to windows 7 (64 bit). Do I need to swap out the cpu and anything else?

Wanted to upgrade to Windows 7 because Microsoft is ending support for XP soon. Guess the only way to do it is convert to the 32 bit version of Win 7...

You will need to swap out the CPU. But you would also need to get more RAM (4GB or more) if you plan to run 64 bit and your also going to need a new motherboard if your going to change the CPU

razvan_mz - you have a 32bit processor that doesn't support 64bit instructions and probably you do not have 4GB RAM.
why do you need windows 7 64bit?

I'm told that MS is phasing out tech support fro XP so I wanted to upgrade to Windows 7, then read about 32 vs 64 bit concerning speed and wondered if it would be inexpensive to throttle up to 64 bit...

bounced - Sounds like I'll just keep it like it is and when it dies take to the PC bone yard. I can get a new desktop on sale cheaper than I could replace all that hardware... Thanks
