Hi guys am trying to reconfigure my backup strategy. I am running a 1T X 2 raid 5 on my computer and also running a 5 X 3T on sinology also on raid 5. Is this an over kill? Thanks.

Most RAID5 engines are not very reliable; a lot can go wrong with RAID5.

If you have a full backup both stored on RAID5, then you will be reasonably safe but probably not as safe as you'd think. A simple thing like bad sectors can destroy one copy, and silent corruption can corrupt the backup.

If you want true reliable storage, you should invest your time and effort in ZFS; which simply is THE best storage technology to utilise at this point in time. It offers RAID-Z which is superior to RAID5.

Your internal Raid 5 will only protect your hardware and does not protect you from data corruption through other means.

EG. Corruptions in the file system, viral infections, accidental deletions etc.

This is where your NAS backup will help you on your files.

A RAID 5 is not invincibility, all your data is vulnerable at any point in time, just much less to hardware faults.

In regards to 'Is this overkill' - no, its not enough actually.
Think I'm kidding? go start a backup from your pc raid5 to the synology and while its running go out to and kill the power to the whole house. Odds are both your pc's and Synology's raid5's are now dead with a good chance all the drives have now suffered platter damage.

You have decent 'hot' backup but it doesn't appear you have any true backup. Find a backup solution that won't be powered on all the time. Removable HDD's, Tape, or Optical disk are often good for just that truly important data, like family pics. You can re-rip movies & music so those aren't real important.

And get UPS's for your synology and pc.
