I want to connect 3 PWM fans to a single 4 pin header on a P5Q Deluxe so I have bought an Akasa Flexa FPS PWM fan splitter cable. As the P5Q only has a single 4 pin connector (CPU_FAN) the idea is to connect the spliter to this then all the other fans, including the CPU cooler, to the splitter, so that the BIOS controls fan speed.

There is one thing that confuses me with my basic electronics knowledge though: the splitter offers 5 4 pin connectors but all (except one) only actually have three pins.

Why is there a missing pin in each connector except one, and what is the significance of the single connector with 4 pins? Will the PWM fans work properly with only three pins?

Excuse my ignorance and thanks for your time!

The last pin is a speed sensor. You can monitor only one fan for speed. Otherwise if all fans sent in sped info, you would get garbage.

Thanks for the answer. So the pins will be ground, power and control, with sense missing? Does this mean I am correct in my assumption that the single connector with 4 pins should be connected to the cpu fan?

Yes. The motherboard wants to know that a fan is connected to the cpu cooler and is operative.
Personally, I don't like dynamic speed control.
I set them at an acceptable speed and noise level which is less annoying.
If things get a bit hotter, so be it. No harm will come.

Thanks Geofelt. This will by first system whereby the fans are dynamically controlled and I have decided to use a controller instead of the PWM splitter if I am unsatisfied with the results.

Out of interest what is it in particular you dislike about dynamic fan control? It's just I haven't yet built the system and I can always order a controller and ditch the splitter.

With dynamic speed control, the fan speeds are constantly changing. I find that to be more distracting than a constant drone.

That could be irritating. I will bear it in mind but as I wear headphones it shouldn't be too bad. I guess I will have to give it a try.

Thanks again for your help.
