my toshiba 1tb has nothing on it, yet says i only have 253gb left please assist

If you are not concerned about data on this drive reformatting it is simply accessed by navigating to disk utility and erasing the volume then creating a new journaled volume.
If you plan on using this drive in more than just a Mac it will need to be formatted in Fat32 which is limited to 4GB max file size.
