Hi everyone,

I just bought new laptop with win8....couldnt choose win7. Firstly I was thinking of removing win 8 and reinstalling win 7, but I red it is risky because of drivers(some parts may not have drivers for win7).

Then I noticed that there is software CLASSIC SHELL. Can you let me knowif it is something OK and i I am nt happy with it can I remove it?

I must ask because I simply cant function in win8.

Thanks!

Install Windows 8.1 if you haven't already, the start menu is closer to the traditional one. I've been using Windows 8 without a start menu replacement since RTM hit the MSDN in August of 2012. It's a fine OS, just takes a few days to get used to.

If you still can't get used to it, install Start8 or Classic Shell

I dont like this ''social network'' style of it. For example I cant just download skype but I must ''buy'' it from Microsoft store an then I have to log i with my e-mail. Than adds all contacts from my e-mail to skype which I dont want etc etc. I aways liked Windows because that was reall computer OS, now I feel like I have some stupid tablet and not 1000 EUR laptop...

I dont know. I guess I am not easy to adjust to new things:)))

You do know that MS owns Skype, right? They can screw it up however they choose.

Huh? Windows 8 is a full OS with all the same underlying user-space functionality as its predecessors. The only thing that was "stripped out" is the classic start menu and the Aeroglass compositor, both of which were replaced with new variants.

Skype for Windows 8 is the store/Win8-UI version that uses the new UI and naturally only works on Windows 8 as it relies on the new UI components.

Skype for Windows Desktop is the classic version of Skype that works on all operating systems starting with Windows XP as it only relies on Win32 libraries.

Any program that ran under Windows 7 should run flawlessly on Windows 8 and Windows 8.1. There are very few exceptions to this.

With Win 8.1 you can operate exclusively in Desktop, so it is like Win 7. Right-click the task bar, go to properties, and look through the options, one is to boot right into Desktop. Another is to have the Start (metro) page just display icons of all possible programs/apps.

Finally, consider Stardock's ModernMix where you can have Win 8 apps be housed in windows with icons located in Desktop task bar.

I find win 8.1 much snappier than win 7.
