XxXEpicSauceXxX :
I have a AMD 7870 (stock) and I was thinking about buying myself a 7990 for an upgrade. What I was wondering is, am I able to crossfire a 7990 with my 7870?
Lots of people say no but some say yes with a catch, is there somebody who can tell me honestly?
If I can't crossfire a 7990, what is better?: 7870 x2 (crossfired) or 7990?
Thanks in advance ~Epic
You can't crossfire between performance brackets. In other words, for CrossFire (but not for SLI) you can combine any GPUs with the same first two digits. So you can combine an HD 7870 with an HD 7850, or an HD 7950 with an HD 7970, but you can't combine an HD 7990 with an HD 7870.
The HD 7990 is already two GPUs in CrossFire, they're just fitted onto one card. But it's still two GPUs, and it comes with the problems associated with CrossFired cards, that is microstuttering, which makes game play feel jaggy even when fps is high. Because of this, I wouldn't recommend the HD 7990, especially because the R9 290X exists.
The R9 290X beats a GTX Titan nearly across the board. The best part is, it's very affordable, even more affordable than a GTX 780, coming in at $580. The R9 290X is easily the best single card solution available right now in terms of performance, and the price is phenomenal since it's nearly half the cost of a Titan.
