ASUS XONAR is a favorite for gamers, as long as you have an open PCI bracket, it'll fit sound cards are not very large.
Also know that sound cards usually aren't necessary, I have BOSE speakers running through a tube stereo and the on-board suffices (I play guitar, bass, etc, I kind of know sound). Headphones can be a different story though.
