If you have something as simple as a NAT router you get the great majority of the function people use firewalls...both pc based and hardware.

Because NAT is stupid when a connection from the internet attempts to talk to a machine in the house the traffic is discarded. Unless you set up port forwarding the router does not know which machine to send the data to. This by itself prevent data from even arriving at the machines to even attempt a attack.

Most other firewall function are trying to prevent a infected machine inside you house from attacking or sending data out. Most virus software does a pretty good job of preventing unauthorized software from getting into a machine.

So most firewalls are a waste of time in a home environment. Now if you had a machine exposed to the internet that needed for example port 80 open then a firewall can detect some of the attacks directed at the web server code. This is why corporation need firewall because they must as part of doing business expose server to the internet. If you do not need to forward any ports then NAT will protect you quite well.

bill001g has pretty well covered the points that I would make, that a dedicated firewall for home use is often not needed, your wireless router, with NAT enabled, will do most of what you need to do. However, a firewall unit will allow you more customization and features than that, if needed. One of the big difference is logging. Not many of your basic routers can actually log inbound and outbound traffic, but most of your firewall devices can. If this is important, then obviously a firewall device is something you should look into. There are other situations such as managing or controlling access through multiple networks, or enabling better inspection or control over ports and traffic allowed through to the internet that a firewall device can also be handy.
