So, after some reviews, it seems that even though the 290x performs better out of the box compared to the 780, when both are overclocked as much as possible, the 780 destroys the 290x (this is at 1080p not 4k). So here is my question: I want to play bf4 at 1080p, and will oc my graphics card. I know that BF4 is an "AMD Optimized" game. So what are the chances that bf4 will perform better on the 290x compared to the 780? how long do you think will it take nvidea to come up with good enough(optimized) drivers for bf4? ultimately, if i want the best gaming experience, do i go with the 290x or the 780?

Well being that "Mantle" will be implemented on BF4 for AMD, I would bet the 290x would be your best bet on that game. We don't know how much better Mantle will do for BF4, but I'm betting it should make some difference. If you have other games that you prefer to play than keep those in mind too when deciding on which GPU to go with. The 290x is currently (at last I checked) ~$100 cheaper than the 780, so that is also a nice bonus too.

No question: 290X is THE choice. It is stronger, cheaper, and BF4 will favor it more.

On top of that, the 290X seems to overclock as easily as the 7970, and as such its lead will only grow (Wait for the non-reference coolers though).

Where did you hear that an overclocked 780 will "destroy" an R9-290X? That's complete BS. All the major sites say that the GTX 780 is slower than the R9-290X no matter what. The R9-290X isn't in the same league as the GTX 780. It's performance level more closely matches that of the Titan. You sound like an nVidia fanboy grasping at straws because he doesn't want to get a Radeon card but doesn't want to get rogered by nVidia with their rape and pillage pricing scheme.

Don't compare OC Non-Reference 780s vs Stock R9 290Xes as it's just isn't fair. Compare Stock vs Stock or OC vs OC. Wait till later when Aftermarket Coolers for the R9 290X are released to increase the overclocking capacity where things get much more pretty for the R9 290X. Definitely a Titan / GTX 780 Ti Killer.

I use a GTX 680 but I find it having a horrible FPS to Price ratio.

And all the goodies for Never Settled Bundle? Another reason I'm compelled to return back to the Red Camp but just don't have the cash.

well... im not a fanboy I just want the best card possible for bf4 and up until recently the 780 has been it, and here is where i heard the overclocking stuff: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=djvZaHHU4I8

As far as being able to oc more with non reference coolers, I didn't think of that. That is a great point.

Yeah the stock cooler is okay, but won't be as good as the aftermarket ones that Asus, XFX, HIS, etc. will be putting on their respective cards. This will allow you cooler/quieter operation or possibly more OC'ing headroom when/if you decide to do that.

The 780 is now even cheaper than the 290x, and non reference versions of the 780 blow the stock one out of the water (msi lightning or Galaxy super oc). They also now come with a game bundle that makes the 290x look like a joke for charging a price premium for the bf4 edition. The only thing that would save amd now is Mantle being a huge success (over 10% would be good enough). If the performance increase from mantle is less than 10%, It is not likely amd will be able to really come back from this very quickly. Nvidia has made almost as much money as AMD has selling CPUs, APUs and GPUs put together.
Also the 290x has almost no overclocking headroom on stock cooler. For a 1080p choice it would probably be more wise to go with a highly overclockable non reference 780 as you get the game bundle, $100 off shield (dont really care about that one lol) and better performance across the board UNLESS mantle provides a HUGE performance increase (considering how hyped the 290x was it seems unlikely).

The 780 WILL NOT beat the 290x on BF4, but if you're playing at 1080 you don't need that 290x. It's kind of like getting a Ferrari to drive around the block. Instead, you should look at the 280 or the upcoming 290 (non X), which is cheaper and geared more towards lower resolutions. Just be sure to get an AMD card for BF4. Also, if you don't have a quad core processor, you'll need one.

BF4 is favoring AMD cards, especially with the new Catalyst drivers that fix a crashing issue. If you only play BF4 (which would be odd), the the 290X is the best choice.

If you play other games, particularly PhysX games, then you'll want to consider the unique technologies the GTX 780 offers. The GTX 780 might be a better value in that it is cheaper and comes with 3 free games. The GTX 780 is a more refined card, and is also going to run much quieter and much, much, much cooler. The 290X is actually pretty noisy. Either card will give you more than enough performance at your resolution.

That's cool, but i don't suggest anyone to go with the gtx 690 or the amd 7990, becuase they're both dual gpus in one, that means a pain in the a**, and getting an sli is much better to lose the frame latency issues that these 2 have. So if you wanna get them for the fps count, just don't. And also, the 690 doesn't use the full 6gb, because it's shared 3x2 and the same is with the 7990. Oh, and i have an EVGA 780 and it's really nice, factory sc so you dont need that bs hard oc-ing.

The 290x is leading is most benches outta the box cause it is overclocked outta the box..... here's one of the examples of OC'd to the wall 780 versus OC'd to the wall 290x. Skip to the 8:40 mark for benchies. It's a sweep at bothe 1920 x 1080 and 2560 x 1600.

The Radeon R9 290X is definitely the best card for BF4. It offers better performance for the price and will also really show it's muscle at higher resolutions or with multiple monitors due to it's 4GB VRAM. BF4 is also optimized for AMD cards which also helps.

and watercooling the 290x is just awesome look around the webs. someone with the EK block on the 290x had it at 1225/1700 max temp was 49Celsius

I haven't seen those results yet, but looks good. I'd probably opt for a 290 w/water cooling or aftermarket NON-OEM air cooling if I had ~$425-500 to spend (includes water block or mark-up on aftermarket air cooling opitons, i.e. Asus CUII, MSI Twin Frozr, etc.).
