Solution

oh well, no one can/want to talk about that. it is hard enough to compare two individual cards (there are many factors like game differences, resolution, prices, drivers and add personal references on top of that). let alone comparing the two whole manufacturers.

lets just say "for you specific conditions, and given the recent price cuts, the 770 will serve you better" you will love this card.

the R9 280X is good option for you, given your 48 inch screen, since these cards are great with high resolutions and cheap compared to nVidia.
there are many R9 280X cards, be careful that your case can only support a maximum of 270mm card length. (http://www.coolermaster-usa.com/product.php?product_id=2969)

all the r9 280X cards i see are about 280~285mm.

do you have that case or you are planing on buying it?

oh i thought you already have the CARD, fewh! :)

well the r9 290X is around $550~580 now, it is a bit shorter though (276~278mm).
regarding the CPU, do not worry about it, your current CPU still meets the minimum requirements of the upcoming hungry games (watch dogs: AMD Phenom II X4 940 @ 3.0Ghz) (BF4: recommended: Quad core CPU (Intel Core i5 or i7) at 3 Ghz). of course upgrading it will give few more frames, but the GPU is the major factor in gaming. so focus on the GPU now, then upgrade the CPU later.

now back to the GPU, can you remove the HDD cages near the card? if not then you either start looking for a different card, or change your case.

nVidia just made some prices cuts on their high end cards, now the GTX770 is $329.
check this MSI card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127741

UPDATE: this MSI card is 260mm long.

this 770 OCed card is a great high-end card, generally it is better than the R9 280X (GENERALLY). so do not worry about gaming performance.
one thing worth mentioning, the R9 280X is better when it comes to memory bandwidth/speed (i.e. it generally performs better on resolutions higher that 1080). but you do not need to worry about that since you are using one monitor only.

now regarding the PSU, if you are NOT planning on a second card in the future, get a ~550W PSU with a single +12V@40A rail, something like http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151094
Seasonic or XFX PSUs are top quality.
