Does the wattage of a power supply really make a difference?

Sorry if this is a silly question but I really don't know. I have just built a system but I am having problems with the graphics driver crashing when I try and use the new Batman game. Someone has hinted that it may be power / cooling issue but am not sure?

my system is:

Motherboard: Gigabyte 970A-DS3P
CPU: AMD FX-6300 6-processors 3.5mhz
Memory: 8Gb
Graphic Card: Zotac Nvidia GeForce GTX 660 Ti.

The case only has a 500w power supply, would this be enough? Why would a higher wattage make a difference??

Wattage makes an enormous difference, but it's just one of several factors. Not all 500W PSUs are capable of the same wattage. The sticker on the side of your PSU will provide you with this information or if you have a model number it should be easy to find out.
As long as it is even remotely decent, 500W is perfectly sufficient for that system.

In general, driver crashes probably aren't related to power, they would be more likely to cause unexpected shutdowns and that type of thing.
The first thing to do is to make sure your graphics card drivers are up to date, as that's what is crashing.

It is enough. If you want more then go to 600-650w to give more OC and headroom. Better buy is mayne GTX 760 if you have money to that. The you can future go SLI and get really powerful gaming rig.
Two 760 are faster than one 780 or titan.

Thanks for this, it is only causing problems when I play the new Batman game so I thought it might be a cooling issue. I have installed and re-installed the most up to date driver but it seems to keep happening.

If it's only happening in one game, it is probably going to be on the software side, so either drivers or the game itself.
If you can get the crash to occur while putting it under load using an entirely different game, then it could be hardware related, perhaps an overheating graphics card or something of that nature.
