Can't reset Invalid Password

I have no idea what site or what service you're on about, but at the moment I'm trying to get to an old Gmail account but because I can't remember exactly when I used a specific service, and I don't remember the password (even though it keeps asking me for one at nearly every damn step) or I don't remember the last time I used the account or even created it, I can't get on...
Can somebody answer me why Google is such a pain in the arse? What's wrong with a good ol' secret question and birth date. Ridiculous.

you not said what site you blabbing on about - so we cant be specific.
Most sites have a "forgot password" option where they will send a mail to your registered e-mail - with details on how to reset your password and assign a new one.
