How Can I Tell What's Causing the Noise in my Computer?

Since I built my gaming PC back in January, I have been somewhat concerned about the noise levels it produces. I have tried to dampen it down a bit through purchasing a Fractal Design Define R4 case (a noise isolating case) as well as buying a pair of gaming headphones which block out a fair bit of sound... but the noise is still noticeably annoying.

I have tried opening my case and listening to the components as they run, but determining the exact source of the majority of the noise is near impossible with simple hearing. From what I've heard, it seems the noise is coming from the upper section of my case where the fans and CPU are.

Anyhow, so I was wondering if there's any methods for determining the source of noise in a computer. I don't really want to have to buy a device which measures sound output, so perhaps there's a way of doing it via software? I don't know :??:

Here's my spec if that helps: Intel i5 3570k, Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo Heatsink, 8GB RAM, Asrock Z77 Extreme4 Mobo, XFX Radeon HD 7950, 1TB 7200rpm HDD, OCZ ZT 650W PSU, Fractal Design Define R4 Case, 1 standard optical drive, 6 fans (including heatsink fan, 4 of these fans are silent series).
