Hello

I think I'm ready for the SSD era, I have Asus K56CM laptop with a 21mm thickness, will a 9mm SSD fit this laptop? I have a 500GB 5400RPM HDD and it's sloooow as a snail. I'm sick of the waiting, need more speed AND battery life. Thanks for answers and sorry for awful english.

I will fit but you only have room for one drive, you will have to replace the harddrive. any 2.5" ssd will fit in the laptop, so if your going with a SSD then buy a big one 256 of 512gb. you will also have to reinstall windows on the new drive.

Can't I just clone the drive?

Samsung has excellent cloning software ("Data Migration" tool). Just be sure to get the updated version from Samsung's website as the version that comes on a CD with the drive does not work.

I'm thinking of buying a Samsung 256GB model "Pro" or "EVO" and noticed that they (Samsung) sells their drives with some "Magician" software which I had never heard of. I've stuck with WD HD units for many years so this Magician software is iffy to me.

Is the Magician software as powerful as something like Acronis True Image? I am "intern-level" aware that SSD's use a different sector size than HD units so I would expect that the Samsung-supplied software would correctly "image-modify" the source drive's data so that the target SSD would run as best possible.

Let me know what ya all think. Thanks!

BTW, these SSD's make my 12 disk RAID5 HD array with 3ware controller (assembled in 2004) look unbelievably huge and wasteful in terms of data loss risk and power consumption.

Modern HDD use 4k internal blocks to reduce the size of used for error correction, so do SSDs. To the host they still talk 512B blocks and accumulate internally. So they don't need to get altered by OS or any other software. Only Windows XP need to get alignedn because of starting at block 63, Vista and later don't have this problem
Samsung provides two tools. The Magician is meant for maintenance and the Data Migration tool for cloning.
