Hey guys , i bought some thermal paste for my i5 today and they tell me to put the paste on the side and then use a plastic card to spread it out in a square on the cpu. Should i do it like that?

this is a good article on thermal paste...

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/thermal-paste-heat-sink-heat-spreader,3600.html

what i generally do is wrap my finger w/ a plastic bag or something and spread it that way. another method is just to put a drop in the center of the cpu and let the heatsink pressure spread it. then there is the method you are referring to which is to use a credit card or something to spread it evenly.

just make sure you dont use tto much casue that would be as bad us not having enough.

I want to do the dot technique cause that must be the easiest , in addition does the color of the thermal paste change anything? This one is white , i've only seeen grey and stuff.

Color doesn't matter.

My CPU has been running at about 80C standby and 100+ while gaming with the normal socket fan , i took it off and saw small dried thermal paste dots , if i re-apply thermal paste will it cure this problem efficiently? Normally i had like 50C standby.

Wow that's way too hot. I would definitely re-apply the paste (use a bit more and spread it around thoroughly). Should fix the problem.
